• A Brief History

     Faculty of Geography was originally the Department of History and Geography, established in 1955 under the College of Letters, Saigon University. In 1963, the Department of Geography was separated and independently operated from the Department of History and Geography. In 1977, the Department of Geography was a part of the Ho Chi Minh City University. The Department became the Faculty of Geography in 1990 under the Decision No. 485/TCCB, dated September 20, 1990 by the president of the Ho Chi Minh City University. Since, 1996, it has become a faculty of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, a member of Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City.



     At the time of its establishment in 1990, the Faculty of Geography had 4 departments: Department of Economic Geography and Regional Development, Department of Environmental Geography, Department of Tourism Geography, and Department of Social and Demographic Geography. In 2005, the Department of Cartography, Remote Sensing and GIS was established. As of March 2013, the Faculty consisted of 5 departments and 38 academics and support staffs. In April 2013, the Department of Tourism Geography has separated from the faculty and become the Department of Tourism belongs to the University of Social Sciences and Humanities.


    The Faculty aims at becoming a leading research and educational unit in the fields of geography in Vietnam and in Asia. We commit to provide qualified human resources and scientific products to contribute to the development of Vietnam and international communities. Currently, the faculty has 23 academics and support staffs who obtained high qualifications from reputed higher educational institutes in Vietnam, Australia, America, Russia, Germany, France, Netherland, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand undertaking teaching and research activities. The Faculty runs four departments, a research center and two laboratories as follows:

    - Climate Change Research Center 

    - Laboratory of Environment

    - Laboratory of GIS
